Scandal: The MAC x Rodarte Make-up collection
Rodarte is launching its first make-up collection for this autumn season in collaboration with MAC Cosmetics. The ‘Juarez’ collection was named in reference to a Mexican town, but has already faced some serious criticism…
The Mulleavy sisters’ idea for their make-up collection was to take inspiration from towns situated on the border between Texas and Mexico. However, on a visit to Juarez, Laura and Kate were struck by the ghostly pale appearance of the factory workers… And therefore created their make-up collection in collaboration with MAC, catering especially for pale skin tones! But not everyone supports this idea, and bloggers have openly criticised the collection.
For Jessica Wakeman - the blogger behind ‘The Frisky’ - taking inspiration from factory workers in Juarez is a revolting concept! "Juarez is an impoverished Mexican factory town notorious for the number of women between the ages of 12 and 22 who have been raped and murdered with little or no response from police." "Most of the young women are employees at the border town's factories, called maquiladoras, and disappeared on the way to or from work." Shocking news that more than explains why the Juarez factory workers are so pale and solemn. It also makes us question how MAC and Rodarte could consider basing their make-up collection on such a sensitive and serious issue.
In the face of the backlash against the collection, MAC has presented its apologies in a press release. The cosmetics label has even decided to donate a percentage of the profit from the Juarez collection to the town’s factory workers!
MAC and Rodarte clearly hadn’t fully thought through their collaboration. But at least they have offered sincere apologies to those who they have offended. However, what bothers us even more than the controversy surrounding the collection is the range of products offered. An extremely pale colour palette, including beige lipsticks and eyewear to give you a ghoulish glow… Who would want to buy this make-up? We’re not convinced that there will be very much money donated to the Juarez workers, as that would require successful sales figures! What a shame, we were so optimistic about Rodarte’s first make-up line in collaboration with MAC.
