Earrings have been worn since ancient times. Until the late twentieth century, most little girls had their ears pierced. In certain cultures like in South-East Asia, it is common to pierce the ears of infants after they are born.
Sailors apart, until the 80’s earrings were reserved for women in Western cultures. But since the late 90’s, a man sporting an earring has become a fashion phenomenon. It is now very common for a man to pierce one or both ears.
Earrings can be made of virtually any material and come in every style imaginable. They can plastic, wooden, gold, silver, pearl, diamond, patterned, pendants, tiny, oversized… you get the idea! Many upscale jewellers like Cartier, Tiffany & Co, Boucheron and Chaumet design extravagant earrings ornate with diamonds, pearls and precious stones.
