Tom Ford

Tom Ford

American designer, Tom Ford, began his career as a designer for Gucci. At the Italian house, he develops a taste for the 50s aesthetic, and designs what will be his best-selling piece: the purple tuxedo.

Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Bianca Jagger all fall in love with Ford’s designs, and contribute greatly to the designer’s popularity. In 1998, when the Gucci group buys the YSL house, Ford took over as Creative Director.

2000 is a defining point in the eccentric designer’s career as he is nominated Best International Designer by VH1/Vogue.

In 2007, the designer forms a partnership with friend, William Sofield, and launches his own label, Tom Ford. Ford’s grandiose vision is not only reflected in the clothes: his first store measured 8,000 square feet, right on Madison Avenue. Yet Ford’s ambition is unwavering, and the designer has aims to design “the first luxury brand of the 21st century.”
