The Hermès story starts in 1837. With the increased dependence on horses, German immigrant, Thierry Hermès opens a saddle and harness studio in Paris. Success rapidly spreads and Hermès expands his company, designing luggage and bags.

The label’s luxurious image appeals to a growing audience, and by the end of the 19th century, Hermès’ fame reaches the ears of its official supplier, Tzar Nicolas II. By the 1920s, the Romanian and Spanish kings, Emperor of Japan and Presidents of the Philippines and Peru all want to be dressed in Hermès.

In the mid-20s, Robert Dumas takes over as Director, ushering the fashion house into the international sphere. Elegant designs, such as the Kelly and Birkin bags, become global icons, earning and securing Hermès the classy chic and sophisticated image it has today.
